Edelrid's Ohm: Innovation for Optimal Safety in Climbing

Edelrid's Ohm is a revolutionary innovation designed to solve a common climbing problem: the significant weight difference between the lead climber and the belayer. If you are part of a climbing duo with a significant weight difference, the Ohm is your solution.

Key Features:

  • Optimal Assistance: The Ohm reduces the manual force required by the belayer to stop a fall.
  • Facilitated Control: It is easier to control the descent of a heavier climber.
  • Simple to Use: Simply attach the Ohm to the first point of the safety chain.
  • Risk Reduction: In the event of a lead climber fall at the first point, the Ohm significantly reduces the risk of ground fall.
  • No Interference: The Ohm does not increase friction for the lead climber and does not affect rope payout.
  • Weight Difference: The Ohm is recommended for weight differences of 10 to 40 kg between the lead climber and the belayer.
  • Single Ropes: The Ohm is compatible with a range of rope diameters from 8.9 to 11.0 mm.
  • German Manufacturing: Made in Germany, the Ohm is synonymous with quality and reliability.

With Edelrid's Ohm, climbing becomes safer, easier, and more fun, regardless of climbing level or weight difference between partners.

Enjoy your climbing experience with the peace of mind that the Ohm offers.

Additional Information

Weight Difference Problem in Climbing

When there is a large weight difference between the lead climber and the belayer, it can pose safety issues. This often occurs in climbing pairs, where the woman is often significantly lighter than her partner.

In the event of a fall, a lighter belayer can be abruptly lifted off the ground and slammed against the wall. Additionally, when the belayer is pulled upward, it significantly increases the fall distance of the climber. If the climber is still near the ground, the belayer and climber could collide. In the worst case, the climber could hit the ground.

Edelrid's Innovation to Compensate

The Ohm was designed in collaboration with the Institute for Mechanical Handling and Logistics (IFT) in Stuttgart, Germany. It is an assisted braking device that attaches to the first safety point.

In the event of a fall, the rope is pulled into the device's braking unit and the fall is gradually stopped. This means that the Ohm does not abruptly brake the rope, but rather progressively, allowing the belayer to dynamically catch the fall.

The Ohm increases friction, regardless of the belay device used. This means that the belayer needs to apply much less manual force on the braking side of the rope and is not suddenly pulled upward or against the wall.

Thanks to its design, the Ohm does not affect the handling of the rope by the lead climber. It does not increase friction for the lead climber. Braking performance only comes into play in the event of a fall. Due to the increased friction, it is also much easier to control the descent of a heavier climber.

The Ohm assists both the belayer and the lead climber. The belayer will no longer be projected against the wall. The lead climber can reach their climbing limit with confidence, knowing that the belayer can secure them and the catch will be smooth.

The Ohm is the solution to fully enjoy your passion for climbing, safely, regardless of the weight difference between you and your climbing partner.
